Rodeo icon Thacker wows Utopia Lions


During the Thursday, Jan. 13, meeting of the Utopia Lions Club, guest speaker Wayne Thacker entertained the audience with tales of his rodeo days.
Thacker has announced rodeos all over Texas and has rodeoed since high school days both east and west of the Sabine River.
Sid Chaney noted that the Ice Cream Crank-off would be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Community Building. Entries must be submitted by 5:30 pm for judging. The best part comes at 6 pm when everyone gets to taste the delectable, frozen confections from Sabinal Canyon's world-renowned ice cream crankers! Proceeds from the Crank-off are earmarked for the Food Pantry.
Jean Findling reported on the March Stride for Sight fundraiser. The Utopia Lions will sponsor a Mop and Broom sale on Thursday, March 3, with proceeds going to the Lions Club Stride for Sight program.
The annual Lions Club Auction is set for Saturday, April 16. Everyone is urged to start going through their "treasures" to bring to the fire station for this worthy cause. More information on the auction will be available at a later date.
The next meeting of the Utopia Lions Club will be held at 7 pm, Feb. 10.
Dick Freeman will present the program about a woman who established a mission in Romania for orphans afflicted with the HIV virus.
