BHS theatre group at El Jacalito earning tips

By Carolyn B. Edwards BCC Staff Writer

The Bandera High School Theatre Pro class will be charming the patrons at El Jacalito Restaurant on Cedar Street from 5 pm to 8 pm, Monday, Jan. 17, in hopes of garnering some big tips.
The money will be used by the Bandera Theatre Booster Club for a one-act play retreat held at Camp Sionito every January and a team-building picnic in March.
Theatre Pro, or Production, is an audition-only class. "Because we are constantly in production of a show, every semester the students must audition to stay in," said BHS Theatre Director Roslyn Houghton. "Consequently there is a very high degree of 'pro'-fessionalism involved in every production. I am very proud of the consistent quality of the students' work ethic, their demeanor and their performances. If you ask the students, they will probably tell you 'pro' means professional, and they work to earn the right."
Almost 100 percent of "Pro" parents are members of the Booster Club. These enthusiastic supporters run all of the concession stands at intermissions of all performances and handle publicity, explained Club Treasurer Theresa Espinosa.
El Jacalito routinely offers its popular eatery often to school groups for fundraising. "We like to help the community - especially the students - and are very happy to provide a fund raising opportunity for the theatre boosters," said Susan Espinosa on behalf of the café's staff.
The Theatre Pro class had a successful run of the musical "Annie" in November. Currently, the senior play "Roomers" is in rehearsal for a 6:30 pm performance on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The next production will be a competition one-act play. "We're presenting my original adaptation of Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables,' entitled 'Redemption'," said Houghton.
"Our public performance will be Monday, March 21, at 6:30 pm. The District contest will be Thursday, March 24, at Canyon Lake High School," she continued, adding, "Theatre I will present three shows in May, but the titles are as yet undetermined."
