During the Jan. 9, general meeting of the Utopia Lions Club, Beverly Williford presented Peace Poster Contest winner, Kaylie Valdez, with a $50 award for first place. The win qualifies Valdez to advance to district level competition. "Congratulations to Kaylie for participating in this contest," Williford said.
The Lions' annual Ice Cream Crankoff will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Utopia Community Building. Judging will begin at 5:30 and everyone will dig into the homemade ice cream at 6 pm. Sabinal Canyon's Caliche Hill Band will provide entertainment.
Susan Merrifield, auction committee chairman, reported that the Utopia Community Auction would take place at noon, on April 12 at the Utopia Volunteer Fire Department building. As a fundraiser, members of the Utopia Independent School District junior class will serve a meal at 11 am.
Proceeds from the benefit auction are earmarked for the Utopia EMS, Utopia VFD and the Utopia Lions Club, which will use the money for Sabinal Canyon organizations and community needs. Merrifield encouraged everyone to attend and participate in this annual benefit.
Secretary Jean Findling presented the Lions Club Recruitment Award to Lee Barton, who brought in four new members to the Utopia Lions Club last year. Findling also presented the Club Excellence Award, which was accepted by past President Rod Chalmers for 2012-2013.
The next meeting will be held at 7 pm, on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Utopia Senior Activity Center.
