It's a new year and it's time to start figuring out what's going to happen the first three months of 2014:
January
• The Lakehills American Legion will host their annual Las Vegas Night fund-raiser Saturday, Jan. 18. Gaming is from 6-9:30 p.m. You buy a set of chips for a set amount at the beginning of the night and use those chips to play games. Chips that you have left after the games (or preferably earned during the games) can be used in the prize auction at 10 pm.
February
• The Lakehills Area Library will host its annual fundraiser at the library around Valentine's Day. It's usually a spaghetti supper and auction.
• The Western Heritage Cowboy Church will conduct their annual town hall meeting Wednesday, Feb 12, beginning at 7 pm.
March
• The Western Heritage Cowboy Church will conduct the Saddle Up For St. Jude's Event Saturday, March 1.
• The Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church hosts it annual tea the first weekend of March.
• The first spring activity at the Lakehills American Legion post home on 26th Street is the Legion's Birthday Chili Cook-off Saturday, March 15.
Mark your calendars now for all these events!
Medina Lake level
The water level measured 976.20 feet above sea level Dec. 31, which is a far cry from the 1,064 feet measured at the top at the spillway. The lake is 87.8 feet down this year.
The lake level started the year at 992.25 feet in January, which means it has continued to drop a little more than a foot a month with a pause and a very slight increase as we've gotten some rain from time to time. But what the weatherman in San Antonio calls rain is just drizzle up here. You probably don't want to wish for a gully-washer, but we'll need two or three of them to fill the lake.
And for those who wonder, the lake's bed is estimated at 912 feet above sea level. So there's still some water left, it's just all near the dam where it is the deepest. Let's hope we never see the bottom of the dam.
Lakehills Library doings
• The library will host an area homeschoolers writing workshop from 2-3 pm now through Wednesday, Feb. 12. If you are interested in participating or can offer assistance with writing skills, please call 830-510-2777 for more information.
• The library will host a Gardening with Joseph class about Smartscaping Saturday, Jan. 18, from at 1-2 pm.
• Kid's Super Saturday is Jan. 25. It is Royal Kingdom day and the library would like to hear from all area Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses. Children can come and be their royal selves enjoying a royal craft, stories of kingdoms and snacks fit for a king.
• The night time book club is reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. They meet the last Monday of the month at 6 pm. The daytime book club is reading Proof of Life by Eben Alexander. They meet at 1 pm on the last Tuesday of the month. Both clubs are open to all and would love to have new members.
• The library's annual fundraiser is coming up and they'll have a drawing for a quilt. Come by the library or talk to a board member to get your tickets for $1 each or six for $5.
