Local kiddos dug 'Dig into Reading'

By Judith Pannebaker BCC Editor

Twenty Bandera County kiddos "Dug into Reading" during the 2013 summer reading program at the Bandera County Public Library.

Sessions for children ages three through 12 years, which concluded on Friday, August 9, were held in both the revamped children's section of the library and on the back patio.

Library board members Diane Conoly of the Dixie Dude Ranch and Rebecca "Bootzie" Boutsin, former librarian with the Medina Independent School District, served as prime movers behind the innovative and engaging session. Library employee Linda Childs headed up the summer pre-school reading program.

Emphasizing the "Dig into Reading" theme, activities included workshops on plants and roots; burrowing insects and animals; rocks and fossils; arrowheads, with flintknapper Scott Hobbs; and dinosaurs, featuring a sandbox "dig" and popular speaker Dinosaur George.

Conoly and Boutsin began renovations to brighten the children's reading area, which, when completed, will be a must-see destination for both visitors and residents. In addition, renowned Austin artist Cindy Ridge has painted a number of scenes depicting Hill Country scenes and wildflowers. Ridge created a mural for the Laura Bush Library in Austin.

According to Conoly, Ridge has more to do before the project is finished. "We still have the walkway leading to the children's section to complete," Conoly said, adding delightedly, "Cindy didn't do the murals for free, but she gave us a heck of a deal."

Helping with the cause, proceeds from Cow Patty Bingo of "Celebrate Bandera," sponsored by the Bandera Community Foundation, earmarked for the Bandera County Public Library Children's Section. Past recipients have included the Boys and Girls Club of Bandera County for the new Lakehills location and the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic.

Funds generated by Cow Patty Bingo will be used to make additional improvements, purchase new books for area youth and expand the library's year round and summer reading programs. Additionally, Conoly indicated security lights and video cameras would be purchased and installed along the back patio to increase security in that area.

Everyone is reminded that at 10:30 am every Wednesday, Miss Linda shares a book with the library's preschool age patrons. For more information on this and other programs, call the library at 830-796-4213.

Tickets for Cow Patty Bingo may be purchased at the front desk of the Bandera County Public Library, 505 Main Street, as well as in the big tent pitched on the parking lot of Lowe's Market on Saturdays.
