BCRW collecting for school libraries in West, Texas
Special to the Courier
The Bandera County Republican Women recently elected a new slate of officers for the remainder of 2013-2014, including Linda James as president. She served as president from 2005 to 2010. Other officers are Vice President of Programs Lila Ward, Vice President of Legislation Erin Clayton; Recording Secretary Lou Holt, Vice President of Membership Jayne Galbreath, Vice President of Campaign Activities Marilyn Chalmers, Treasurer and PAC Treasurer Tammy Duncan and Corresponding Secretary Josephine Kluna.
After being sworn in, the board quickly announced the first project the club would undertake would be to raise funds for school libraries in West, Texas. Located in Central Texas just north of Waco, the town of West was essentially destroyed in April by an explosion at a fertilizer plant.
Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams asked members of the Texas Federation Republican Women (TFRW) to assist in restocking the school libraries. Three school libraries lost a total of 15,000 books.
"Our goal is to provide monetary assistance to the three campuses to help them open their libraries before the 2013-2014 school year," said Lila Ward, TFRW SD24 director. During the month of June, members of the BCRW are asking for cash donations for the project. The BCRW will match funds collected up to $500.
Those interested in assisting with the Literacy Project can contact any of the BCRW officers or mail a donation to Bandera County Republican Women, PO Box 734, Bandera 78003.
Donations will also be collected at the Bandera County Republican Women Luncheon, slated for 11:30 am to 1 pm, Friday, June 14, at the Silver Sage Community Center, 803 Buck Creek Boulevard. Guest Speaker will be the new Texas National Republican Committee Woman Toni Anne Dashiell, who will discuss overcoming current challenges facing the Republican Party.
In May, Dashiell was elected to fill the unexpired term of the late Borah Van Dorlomen.
The catered lunch is $10 per person. Those attending are asked to RSVP to Ward at 210-913-1163 or email@example.com. The public is urged to attend this informative meeting.
