Light up the Night in Fredericksburg

Doug White

What a wonderful time of the year! This year, I was lucky enough to participate in two wonderful Christmas parades. The first one, on Dec. 1, was a night parade in Fredericksburg, fittingly called “Light Up The Night Christmas Parade.” There were 125 entries! Even Mickey Mouse showed up for this huge parade event. The first 30 minutes of the parade was televised live on KEYE-TV, the CBS affiliate in Austin. (I am sorry to report that our Chicken Car was not televised due to the number of parade participants and our position in the line-up.)
The word got back to us that there were about 60,000 spectators. I had no idea that downtown Fredericksburg could handle that many folks at one time. My arm still hurts from waving to the crowd from the Chicken Car. I’m sure many of these people saw the Chicken Car for the first time! The organizers of this parade deserve a special thank-you for making the parade a super success. It was well organized, and I had a fun evening in Fredericksburg.
The second parade was the daylight Cowboy Christmas parade in Bandera on Dec. 2. The crowd was fairly large and many folks participated. Everything went like clockwork and the announcers introduced each and every float perfectly. I think there was a lot of Christmas sprit in this parade, and I was lucky to have my coworker Roxanne Rardin ride with me in the Chicken Car. I could tell that she enjoyed being a part of the parade. Afterwards, she told me several times how much she enjoyed it.
Well, since we are closing in on the Christmas holiday, I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a wonderful and blessed Christmas.
