Go Back

An important day

Doug White

I thought I'd share some interesting events that happened on this day in history. Here we go:
• Under the old Julian calendar this was New Year's Day. It's now called "Old New Year."
• In 83 BCE, Mark Anthony of Rome was born.
• The "Fundamental Orders" was adopted in Connecticut in 1639. This was the first Constitution that created a government.
• In 1784 the American Revolutionary War ended when Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris.
• In1943 Franklin Roosevelt became the first President of the United States to travel by airplane while in office. He flew from Miami to Morocco to meet with Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
• In 1952 the Today Show premiered with host Dave Garroway.
• The Hudson Motor Car Company merged with Nash - Kelvinator Corp. to form American Motors in 1954.
• In 1973 Elvis Presley's concert "Aloha from Hawaii" was broadcast live by satellite. It set the record as the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history.
• In 2005 the Huygens probe landed on Saturn's moon Titan.
This was a brief glimpse of this date in history. We should always remember that every day is important for many things. I hope you enjoyed the look back.
