Highlights from SILVER SAGE CORRAL

Doris Doebbler

We're still talking about last week's Cowboy Capital Opry - it was that great! We're sorry if you weren't there because you missed a lot of talent and fun.

Here's some great news. A special source tells us that she overheard Wade Benson Landry tell Gerry Payne that he loved coming to Bandera and would be here same time next year.

So, get yourself a 2013 calendar and mark it for an Opry you won't want to miss. That man entertains with so much energy that we were exhausted by the time the show was over!

By the way, did you hear Gerry announce what great-name star would grace our stage next month? It's none other than that "nice to look at, sweet to hear" John Wayne Shultz!

Don't you just love this time of year!?

Speaking of the Cowboy Capital Opry, we would like to thank our directors and staff who prepare the meals prior to show time. A lot of preparation goes into the fixing's and they're always very tasty. This month, dinner was a delicious grilled chicken sandwich served on a jalapeno-cheese bun with a dollop of very tasty potato salad and topped off with a slice of ice-cold watermelon - for only $4!

Additionally, directors and staff have been discussing the best way to handle reserved seating for the Opry. A plan will be in place for the September show. In the next few weeks, we'll discuss options in this column, which gives us six weeks to implement the plan. Stay tuned.

Lately, it's gotten quite warm after 10 am, but that's okay - especially if you love dominoes and enjoy the game of 42. The heat gives you an excuse to stay inside and practice your game. The July 42 Tournament will be held at 12:30 pm, Thursday, July 12, at the Silver Sage. Come join the competition.

Another enjoyable activity during the heat of the day is strolling through the Silver Sage Thrift Store, located at the Bandera Village Mall on Highway 16 South. Our store is air conditioned and comfortable; our volunteer staff is so friendly; and our little store is filled with all kinds of neat things for the home and yard and both kids and adults.

Merchandise includes books and puzzles, as well as lots of neat crafting items - things to keep you and the kiddos occupied and happy when it's just too hot to be outside.

Come see what we have to offer, and remember that thrift shop proceeds benefit Bandera County's Meals on Wheels program. That makes the experience doubly beneficial!

A couple of weeks ago we mentioned that work was progressing on a storage room and carports for our Meals on Wheels vehicles. It looks like the job is almost complete. Take a look next time you drive by or come to visit!

Our Friday Nite Jam Session and Birthday Bash are coming up in just a couple of weeks! Stay tuned for details!

Take care of yourself, stay out of the heat as much as possible and drink lots of water. We're now in the hottest part of the summer and we want you to be safe and healthy.

Although we love our Hill Country, we love you even more. That's our thought, and we're sticking to it!
