2012-06-14Urgent need for box fans
Vicki L. George
The summer heat is here and many of our clients do not have air conditioning or cannot afford the electricity to run one. Bandera County Helping Hand is appealing for new 20-inch box fans, which will be given to those in need of relief from the heat.
A woman left an abusive situation with two children. She fled with only her identification and the clothes they were wearing. We were able to provide her with more clothing, food, household items and toiletries.
Another woman left her abusive husband and he then burned all her belongings. She took the children and is in hiding although she did get a job. She needed some gasoline for transportation and some food and we provided those things.
A single mom with two young ones has a job but needed some help with her electric bill. We kept her power on.
A single man just lost his job and needed assistance with his electric bill. We were able to help him, too.
Another man injured his leg and is unable to work temporarily. He came up short on his electric bill. We partnered with St. Vincent de Paul to keep his power on.
Yet another man recently lost his job and needed our assistance with his electric bill. We helped him with that.
A single mom has a job but had to miss a week due to illness. Then she couldn't pay her electric bill. We kept her electricity flowing.
In the past week we assisted twelve families with food.
Helping Hand also has some special food needs: Meat, in any form; peanut butter; box dinners; powdered milk; and condiments.
We still have requests for: A set of Corelle dishes and a DVD/VCR player.
