Highlights from SILVER SAGE CORRAL

Doris Doebbler

Father's Day is coming up, a day set aside to honor the very special men in our lives - just as we gals were honored on Mother's Day in May. Dads, we dedicate this column to you.

History tells us Sonora Smart Dodd introduced the tradition of Dad's Day in the early part of the 20th century, in Spokane, Washington. Ms. Dodd's mother died when she was very young and her dad lovingly worked hard and sacrificed to raise his family. Because Ms. Dodd's father's birthday was June 19, 1910, that was the month selected to honor all fathers. In 1972, President Richard Nixon made Father's Day a permanent national holiday to be celebrated the third Sunday of every June. Now you know "the rest of the story."

"You know, fathers just have a way of putting everything together." Erika Cosby
Last week, commenting about the June Cowboy Capital Opry, we failed to mention that the audience included a group of Polish visitors. They enjoyed the music and entertainment provided by Gerry and "his gang."

It's exciting that folks come from all over the world just to see our show.

Our visitors at June 5's Opry on June 5 were from our Sister City-County Strzelce Opolskie, Poland, who were visiting Bandera.

Speaking of the Opry, we promised last week to tell you who the July special guests would be! Hang on to your hats 'cause they're coming back!

Gerry Payne is featuring that good ole "Swinging Cajun Style" offered by Wade Benson Landry and his lovely wife, Teresa Bowe Landry, straight from the God and Country Theatre in Branson, Missouri! Wade plays a "mean" fiddle and he and his wife offer Cajun, traditional country, western swing and gospel music. They are fantastic entertainers so don't miss this show! Show time is at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 3.

"She got her good looks from her father. He's a plastic surgeon."

Groucho Marx
Want to give dad something special for his day? Then treat him to the Silver Sage's second "Concert in the Garden," slated for 7:30 pm, Tuesday, June 19. Featured performers for this free concert are Kevin Higgins and Barbara Maltese from Austin. To make that special man in your life really happy, don't forget to bring a comfy lawn chair and his favorite drink and snacks!

"Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys." Anonymous
Are you wondering what's going on out back behind the kitchen? A storage building and carport is being built to house the Silver Sage vehicles used to deliver Meals on Wheels. This will protect Corral vehicles from the weather and make it more convenient and safer for our drivers.

"By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong." Charles Wadworth

Understand many of you have had very "productive" gardens this year! If you've canned, frozen or pickled all you can use and if your friends are starting to avoid you because they just don't need any more squash, we have a suggestion. Meals on Wheels recipients and those who dine with us in-house love fresh, homegrown veggies. What a treat! However, call the office at 830-796-4969 before dropping them off. Let us know what you have and when you would like to bring it in so our chefs will be prepared.

"He didn't tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it." Clarence Budington Kellend

Happy Father's Day all you wonderful dads out there!

We love you all and hope you have a very special day.
